Filer Steps Down as Head Men's Volleyball Coach to Pursue Other Opportunities

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Mount Mercy athletics department has announced that head men's volleyball coach Austin Filer has stepped down from his position in order to pursue new coaching opportunities.

"We're incredibly grateful for Austin's six years of leadership, dedication, and commitment to our student-athletes and program," said Director of Athletics Paul Gavin. "The foundation he helped build will have a lasting impact, and while we're sad to see him go, we wish him nothing but success as he begins this exciting new chapter in his coaching career."

During his six seasons at the helm of the Mustangs, Filer compiled a record of 113-38, while leading the team to three consecutive NAIA National Tournament appearances. Filer also was instrumental in coaching seven NAIA All-Americans, including a first team selection in 2026. Filer also garnered the Heart of America Coach of the Year honor in 2026, as the team compiled a record of 23-5 during the season.

"I am incredibly grateful to Paul Gavin and the entire Mount Mercy community for their unwavering support of our men's volleyball program," Filer added. "The opportunity to build this program and work alongside such outstanding student-athletes, coaches, and colleagues has been a privilege. The program is in a great position for continued success, and I'm excited to watch what this team accomplishes in the years ahead."

A search for the next men's volleyball coach will begin immediately.
