Mustangs sweep Wildcats to stay perfect in league play
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Mount Mercy picked up a come-from-behind, 3-2 victory in eight innings in the opener, then shut out Culver-Stockton, 4-0, in game two of Wednesday's Heart of America Athletic Conference softball doubleheader at Busse Field.
Alle Thompson broke a scoreless tie with a two-run homer in the top of the sixth to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead, but the Mustangs answered in the bottom half when Sam Lee drilled her own two-run shot to tie things up. Allie Poston's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth was the game-winner, scoring Lee from third base.
Lee finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in for Mount Mercy. Jayna Witzany (6-1) tossed four-hit ball over eight innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out 13 with seven walks.
The Mustangs (10-8, 4-0 Heart) scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and it was more than enough for Kallie Minger (4-4), who limited the Wildcats (2-4, 0-4 Heart) to three hits with six strikeouts and three bases on balls. Lee was 2-for-4 with a run scored, Mikayla Fritz went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, and Raquel Trolliet also finished 2-for-3 while scoring a run.
Mount Mercy is on the road this weekend, traveling to Oskaloosa to take on William Penn on Saturday at 1:00 pm and Grand View on Sunday at 1:00 pm in Des Moines.
