Witzany throws no-hitter, Mustangs get ninth-straight win

CANTON, Mo. -- Jayna Witzany threw her second no-hitter of the season and Kalli Minger tossed a shutout in game two as the Mount Mercy softball team continued its hot streak with 5-0, 3-0 sweep of Culver-Stockton in Tuesday's Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Allie Poston homered and Jade Sharp drove in a pair of runs to lead the Mustangs in the opener. Sharp, Alyssa Niketopolous, and Natalie Tecklenburg also had two hits apiece in support of Witzany, who improved to 14-2 on the season. She hasn't allowed a run in six consecutive starts and has only given up 11 hits in her last 38 innings with 64 strikeouts and eight walks.

Mikayla Fritz blasted her fifth home run of the season in the second inning, Rylee Goodfellow added an RBI double in the fifth, and Tecklenburg scored Poston with a sacrifice fly in the sixth in the game two win. Sharp and Poston collected two more hits as well. Minger moved to 9-6 on the year after scattering nine hits in a complete-game shutout. She struck out three and walked one.

Mount Mercy (24-11, 17-3 Heart) faces a stiff test this weekend when they travel to Fayette, Mo., on Saturday to face 11th-ranked Central Methodist (23-4, 15-1 Heart) at 1:00 pm. After that, the Mustangs host Graceland (9-21, 5-12 Heart) on Monday at 4:00 pm in their regular-season home finale at Busse Field.
