Mustangs Split Opening Doubleheader in Florida

MELBOURNE, Fla. - The Mount Mercy softball team returned to the diamond, beginning a weeklong trip in Florida participating in the Space Coast Games. The Mustangs would drop the opener to No. 10 Marian by a score of 11-0, before taking down Florida National by a score of 4-0.

Game One

The Mustangs (5-5) saw a multi-hit game from Sam Lee, who went 2-3 from the plate in the loss. Lee would record a two-out triple to left field in the third, before singling to center field which advanced Natalie Tecklenburg to second on the play. The other Mustang to record a hit in the game was Allie Poston, who singled to center field in the fourth inning. 

The Knights were led by a three-hit outing from Abbey Hoffman, who would go a perfect 3-3 while also driving in a run. The run producers from Marian came from Abby Madere, who would led the Knights with four RBI's, who's three-run double in the third spread the Knights lead to 10. Brooke Knox would record three RBI's on a two-hit performance in the win.

Jaylah Guilliam earned her fourth win of the season for Marian, pitching three innings while only allowing one hit and striking out two. Kalli Minger was tabbed with the loss, pitching just under three innings while allowing 11 hits.

Game Two

Mount Mercy (6-6) got back in the win column in game two, taking down Florida National by a score of 4-0. The Mustangs were paced by two-hit performances from Sam Lee and Calli Janik, both of whom drove in runs in the win. A third RBI came from Allie Poston, who would also draw a pair of walks in the win.

Florida National was held to just three hits in the contest, coming from three different players. Janessa Esquibel, Tara McCaffrey, and Alyssa Songer.

Alyssa McElvain earned her third win of the year, pitching all seven innings while allowing just the three hits and striking out four FNU batters. Janessa Esquibel was tabbed with the loss, pitching four innings and allowing two earned runs, while striking out one.

The Mustangs will return to the diamond at the Space Coast Games tomorrow in Melbourne, playing Aquinas (Mich.) and Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.), with first pitch set for 1:30 p.m. CDT
