Mount Mercy Softball Season Preview
As the Mount Mercy softball team gears up for the 2026 season, they look to build on a solid 28-23 record from last year. The Mustangs had a commendable run in the Heart conference tournament, notably eliminating Central Methodist with a decisive 5-2 victory.
This season, Mount Mercy will benefit from the return of several key players. Ashley Webb, who pitched 115 innings last year with an impressive 112 strikeouts and a 3.47 ERA, will be a valuable asset on the mound. Ashley Smith, known for her speed and agility with 39 hits and 29 stolen bases in 2025, will continue to be a threat on the bases. Additionally, Calli Janik, who reached a new career high with a .359 batting average, alongside 10 home runs and 32 RBIs, will aim to maintain her strong offensive presence.
The Mustangs face significant challenges right from the start with high-profile matchups against GPAC opponents Northwestern and Midland. These early games are especially pivotal as the Mustangs seek redemption after last year's season opener loss to Midland.
In the offseason, the team has been focused on addressing the impact of losing several graduating seniors. The Mustangs have been working diligently to fill these gaps, which will be crucial for maintaining their competitive edge throughout the season.
As the new season unfolds, Mount Mercy softball is poised to take on the challenges ahead with a blend of experienced returners and strategic adjustments. The Mustangs are ready to face the competition and continue their pursuit of excellence on the field.
