Mustangs close out Valor, pick up road win

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Mount Mercy women's basketball team rebounded from an eight-point halftime deficit to defeat Evangel, 68-60, and earn another Heart of America Athletic Conference road win on Saturday afternoon.

The Mustangs (10-12, 7-4 Heart) did it with defense, rebounding, and free throw shooting. They limited the Valor (11-10, 7-4 Heart) to 31.9 percent field goal shooting, outscored Evangel, 19-9, at the free throw line, and held a 41-40 advantage on the glass. Mount Mercy has won six of seven games and three in a row on the road.

Sammy Mia led four Mustangs in double figures with 16 points. Sassy Coleman added 14 points, Madison Dreckman and Annika Headington 10 apiece. Headington also pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds, Dreckman tallied five assists.

Evangel counted two double digit scorers. Logan Jones had 12 points off the bench while Abby Wildermuth chipped in 11. Alexis Roach led the Valor with seven rebounds and four assists.

Mount Mercy hosts 12th-ranked Clarke on Wednesday at 5:30 pm at Hennessey Recreation Center, then travels to Marshall, Mo., to face Missouri Valley on Saturday at noon.
