Mustangs outrebounded in final road game

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Mount Mercy women's basketball team traveled to Grand View on Wednesday night for their final Heart of America Athletic Conference road contest of the season. The Mustangs fell 92-58 to the Vikings at Sisam Arena. 

Mount Mercy (11-18, 7-16 Heart) shot 41.1 percent from the field compared to Grand View (21-7, 17-5 Heart) at 46.7 percent, but the difference in the game was rebounds. The Mustangs were out-rebounded 42-27, resulting in 23 second chance points for the Vikings. 

Madison Dreckman scored the first five points of the game and back-to-back layups from Sammy Mia and Deja Antoine saw Mount Mercy take a quick 9-2 lead. A 17-0 run by Grand View put them in front for the rest of the game. A four-point swing from Karlie Krogman brought the Mustangs within four, 19-15. The Vikings scored 25 points in the first two quarters and held Mount Mercy to only nine in the second, taking a 50-27 lead at the break. 

Mount Mercy played the final two quarters tighter, only being outscored by five and six respectively. Marissa Brantley scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half, knocking down two 3-pointers. Joining Brantley in double figures was Dreckman (13), Mia (12), and Krogman set a career-high with 10 off the bench. Annika Headington pulled down a team high seven rebounds, three coming on offense. 

The Mustangs are back at home on Saturday, Feb. 18 for an 11:00 am tip-off against Evangel (Mo.) (13-12, 12-8 Heart) inside Hennessey Rec. Center. Eight seniors will be honored before the game.
