Mustangs Secure Narrow Win Over Statesmen

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Mount Mercy secured a 56–53 home win over William Penn on Tuesday night at the Hennessey Recreation Center, using a decisive fourth-quarter stretch and consistent half-court execution to close out a Heart of America Athletic Conference matchup. The Mustangs improved to 5–4 overall and 2–1 in league play with the result.

Mount Mercy generated its separation through ball control, interior scoring and second-chance production. The Mustangs finished with a 32–8 advantage in points in the paint and a 12–4 margin in second-chance points. Both teams committed 19 turnovers, but Mount Mercy converted those extra opportunities into timely possessions during its late-game scoring sequence.

Sydni Morris led Mount Mercy with 18 points on 7-of-20 shooting while adding six rebounds and three turnovers in 30 minutes. Taylor Rose posted a 6-point, 15-rebound performance and recorded two assists, one block and one steal in 37 minutes. Rose's work on the defensive glass stabilized several key late-game stops.

Isabel Wallschlaeger totaled eight points, five assists and two steals, while Aubrey Luvan and Sadie Struchen each contributed perimeter shot creation and defensive pressure from the guard position. Candace Baker added seven points off the bench, including the go-ahead field goal in the final minute.

The Mustangs trailed 31–24 at halftime after William Penn generated early scoring in transition and connected on four second-quarter 3-point attempts. Mount Mercy responded by tightening its half-court coverage after the break, holding the Statesmen to 13 third-quarter points and limiting them to 13.3% shooting from the floor in the frame.

A 3-point make from Struchen and a transition 3 from Luvan sparked the initial push that erased the deficit and tied the score at 33–33 with 6:41 remaining in the third quarter.

Mount Mercy's defense continued to dictate the pace as the half progressed. The Mustangs forced multiple empty possessions, including turnovers from William Penn guards attempting to penetrate the lane. A pair of free throws from Rose and a layup from Gabby Dwanyen trimmed the margin further, and the Mustangs ended the third quarter trailing only 38–37.

The fourth quarter opened with a Morris layup that tied the score again. After William Penn briefly reclaimed the lead behind perimeter shooting, Struchen countered with a 3-pointer from the right wing, giving Mount Mercy a 47–44 advantage at the 8:34 mark. The teams traded possessions until Wallschlaeger converted a layup to regain the lead at 51–50 with 6:01 remaining.

Mount Mercy maintained control through consistent half-court execution, using Morris and Rose in ball-screen actions to generate favorable matchups. Morrill added a pair of layups, including one assisted by Wallschlaeger, extending the lead to 53–50 with 5:25 to play. William Penn responded with a 3-point make from Kayla Jones to tie the contest 53–53 with 3:26 remaining.

Following a series of empty possessions by both teams, Mount Mercy executed a late-clock set resulting in a 3-pointer by Baker with 56 seconds remaining, giving the Mustangs a 56–53 advantage. William Penn was unable to convert on a pair of subsequent attempts, and Rose secured the defensive rebound with 11 seconds left. The Mustangs sealed the win by forcing a contested perimeter attempt on the final possession.

Mount Mercy shot 38.9% from the field and 5-of-15 from beyond the arc while converting 9-of-11 free throws. The Mustangs outrebounded William Penn 37–41 overall while posting a 6–11 margin on the offensive glass. The win marked Mount Mercy's 12th lead change of the night in a game that also featured nine ties.

Mount Mercy returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 3, when they host Grand View at Hennessey Recreation Center, with tipoff set for 5:30 p.m.
