Strong Defense Propels Mustangs Past Statesmen

OSKALOOSA, Iowa — Mount Mercy (7-8, 3-5) edged William Penn (5-11, 2-6), 56-50, overcoming a second-quarter deficit with a strong defensive performance, including 11 blocks.

Mount Mercy opened the first quarter with a strong start, highlighted by Sam Kiel's 3-pointer at 9:09 to initiate scoring. The team capitalized on the Statesmen's turnovers, with Isabel Wallschlaeger contributing a steal that led to a scoring opportunity. Taylor Rose added to the early momentum with a jumper, assisted by Wallschlaeger, extending the lead to 7–2.

Defensive efforts were solid, as Mount Mercy limited the Statesmen's second-chance points, securing eight defensive rebounds. Sydni Morris contributed significantly with a defensive rebound and a subsequent score, helping maintain the momentum. Mount Mercy held the largest lead of six points late in the quarter, closing the first with a 14–10 advantage after the Statesmen's last-second fast-break layup.

Mount Mercy began the second quarter by extending their lead to nine points at 7:23, with contributions from Sydni Morris and Aubrey Luvan, who both scored in the paint. However, the Statesmen responded effectively, narrowing the gap by capitalizing on fast-break opportunities, including a layup by Kayla Jones.

As the quarter progressed, the Statesmen continued to mount pressure, tying the game at 23 with 4:41 remaining. The home team's defensive efforts were matched by their offensive push, highlighted by a three-pointer from Laney Parker, which helped them seize the lead.

Mount Mercy managed to cut the deficit to three points by the end of the quarter, thanks to Isabel Wallschlaeger's late jumper. The second quarter concluded with the Statesmen leading 29-26, setting the stage for a competitive second half.

Mount Mercy began the third quarter by overcoming an early deficit with a key 3-pointer by Sam Kiel at 7:36, assisted by Isabel Wallschlaeger. This shot propelled the team to retake the lead. The defense was strong, with five blocks throughout the quarter, including two from Taylor Rose and Candace Baker, which limited the Statesmen to just two field goals.

Mount Mercy extended their lead with contributions from Taylor Wells, who added a layup at 4:31, and Sam Kiel, who converted two free throws at 3:34. Candace Baker solidified the advantage with a layup assisted by Isabel Wallschlaeger at 1:44, bringing the lead to six points. Although the Statesmen responded with a late 3-pointer, Mount Mercy maintained a 37-34 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

Mount Mercy began the fourth quarter with efficient scoring and a strong defensive presence. Isabel Wallschlaeger opened the scoring with a jumper, contributing to Mount Mercy's control in the paint, which totaled 6 points for the quarter. Despite turnovers, defensive rebounds and key blocks by Sam Kiel maintained momentum.

Taylor Rose's layup and subsequent three-pointer extended Mount Mercy's lead, while her free throws at the 1:22 mark helped sustain a double-digit advantage. Isabel Wallschlaeger's foul shots continued to build the lead, which reached its largest at 13 points with just over a minute remaining.

The quarter concluded with Mount Mercy securing a comfortable 56–50 victory, effectively managing the Statesmen's attempts to close the gap with timely free throws and defensive stops.

Taylor Rose scored 12 points and added four rebounds, converting 4 of 7 from the field. Sydni Morris collected a game-high 16 rebounds along with nine points, setting a season high in rebounds and demonstrating a strong presence on the boards.

Isabel Wallschlaeger led the team with seven assists and contributed nine points while also recording a steal. Sam Kiel added nine points, making 2 of 6 shots from beyond the arc, and posted three blocks.

Neva'eh Diaz-Doolin contributed with five points, two steals, and two assists, showcasing defensive capabilities for the Statesmen. Taylor Lawhorne added to the defensive effort with three steals, while also scoring four points, including a three-pointer.

Reagan Pavesi matched Lawhorne's scoring output with eight points and two steals, hitting two shots from beyond the arc. Meghanne Freehill was effective from the perimeter, scoring eight points with two three-pointers, and secured two offensive rebounds. Each player demonstrated a mix of defensive and offensive contributions in the game.

Mount Mercy holds a record of 7-8 overall and 3-5 in conference play. William Penn University stands at 5-11 overall with a 2-6 conference record.

The Mustangs will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 10th, hosting Park University at Hennessary Recreation Center starting at 2 pm.
