Mustangs win second straight, Felderman medalist
PARKVILLE, Mo. - The Mount Mercy women's golf team won the Park University Spring Classic on Tuesday afternoon, which was played at The Deuce at The National Golf Club of Kansas City. This is the Mustangs second consecutive team victory.
Breanna Felderman was crowned the individual champion after leading the field from the get go. She used a three-birdie, back nine in round one to finish at 74 (+4), the lowest score of the tournament. Despite not recording a birdie in round two, Felderman held her first place spot with 11 pars. She medalled at 151 (74-77), defeating the second and third place finishers by just two and three strokes, respectively. Felderman has now finished in the top five in all three events this Spring.
Joining Felderman as a medalist and in the top five was Kirsten Miller. She fired a 160 (79-81), for fourth place; her second straight event with a top-five finish. The rest of the Mustang five all finished in the top half of the field; Gracie Murray was 11th (79-86=165), Aoi Ito tied for 13th (85-85=170), and Lucia Larruscain was 17th (90-82=172). Mount Mercy's individual, Kaitlin Hotchkiss, also had a strong performance, finishing 18th with scores of 89 and 94 for a total of 173.
After round one, Mount Mercy held a seven stroke advantage over second place, Grand View. Despite battling windy conditions, the Mustangs (317-325=642) increased their lead to nine strokes to remain atop the leaderboard after both rounds were completed. Mount Mercy was the only team to score under 320 for a single round. Grand View finished runner-up (324-327=651), host school, Park (Mo.) was third (332-323=655), Science and Arts of Okla. (352-352=704) and Southwestern (Kan.) (354-350=704) tied for fifth.
Mount Mercy has an 11 day hiatus until they are back on the links for their home dual versus cross-town rival, Coe. The Mustangs and Kohawks will battle it out on Saturday, April 15 at Hunter's Ridge Golf Course in Marion. Tee times have not yet been announced.
