Mustangs' Historic Weekend Leads to First Victory of the Season

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Mount Mercy secured the team title at the Kohawk Classic at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course on Sunday, finishing at 23-over par to top a 10-team field. The Mustangs held off Dubuque (+31), Wartburg (+55), and Buena Vista (+77) to claim the championship, marking a new program 36-hole low score.

Leading the way was Chiara Bothe, who earned the solo tournament win. Bothe opened with an even-par front nine that included a string of pars before carding a 37 on the back. 

Carli Irvine provided strong support, posting rounds of 74-73 to finish second overall. Irvine's scorecard featured a birdie at the par-4 second and consistent play down the stretch with a score of two-under through the final four holes.

Gracie Murray added a top three finish, closing at 72–77. Murray rebounded from early bogeys with a birdie on the par-5 14th and steady play over her final four holes.

Kyla Johnson placed 16th with rounds of 80–79, highlighted by a clean stretch of four pars on the back nine. Lauren McPhillips-Newcomb rounded out the Mustang lineup in 28th.

The Mustangs will return home following the season opening victory, taking on Hunters Ridge Golf Course in Marion for the Mustang Fall Championship next weekend.
