Campbell Scores Game Winner as Mustangs Open Heart Play Victorious

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Mount Mercy secured its first win over Grand View since 2018 with a 1-0 decision Saturday afternoon at Hadzic Field, highlighted by a decisive goal from Eden Campbell in the opening half.

Campbell delivered the match-winner in the 29th minute, scoring directly on a corner kick, after the Mustangs generated sustained pressure in the attacking third. The goal capped a first half in which Mount Mercy dictated tempo, producing seven shots and six corner kicks while limiting Grand View to just two attempts on frame.

The Mustangs' defensive organization proved decisive after halftime, withstanding a push from the Vikings while maintaining shape through the midfield and back line. Goalkeeper Manuela Gutierrez posted two saves, including a key stop in the 87th minute to preserve the clean sheet.

Mount Mercy finished with a 13-5 advantage in total shots and a 9-1 edge in corner kicks, consistently forcing Grand View into defensive recovery situations. Nadine Sanchez and Renata Bernal-Martinez accounted for five of the Mustangs' attempts, keeping pressure on Vikings goalkeeper Maya Fritz, who finished with eight saves.

Physical play marked the contest, as the two sides combined for 21 fouls. Grand View collected three yellow cards, while Mount Mercy's Lauren O'Toole was booked in the 74th minute. The Mustangs' back line, anchored by Campbell, Hazel Koenighain, and Marissa Taylor, absorbed the Vikings' late advances and cleared service out of dangerous areas.

The result moves Mount Mercy to 3-1-1 overall and 1-0-0 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play. Grand View fell to 0-1-2 overall and 0-1-0 in league competition.

For the Mustangs, the win marks a milestone, snapping a seven-year drought against the Vikings. The squad will return to the field on Wednesday, taking on Graceland at Hadzic Field, with kickoff slated for 5 p.m.
