Mustangs Earn Hard Fought Draw with Graceland
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Mount Mercy played to a 0-0 draw against Graceland on Wednesday afternoon at Hadzic Field, holding firm despite playing shorthanded for more than 75 minutes following an early red card.
The Mustangs (3-1-2, 1-0-1 Heart) matched the Yellowjackets (3-1-2, 0-0-1) in both shots and saves, with each side finishing with seven attempts and three stops. Mount Mercy generated four shots in the opening half and three after intermission but was unable to convert against Graceland goalkeeper Alexis Porter, who recorded three saves.
The turning point came in the 13th minute when midfielder Nadine Sanchez was issued a red card, forcing Mount Mercy to compete a player down for the remainder of the match. Despite the setback, the Mustangs maintained a compact defensive shape, limiting Graceland to two first-half shots on goal. Goalkeeper Manuela Gutierrez registered three saves across 90 minutes, including key stops in the 16th and 78th minutes to preserve the clean sheet.
Mount Mercy's best attacking sequence of the first half came in the 32nd minute when substitute Catarina Vaz Ghobrial forced a save from distance. Later in the half, Lauren O'Toole created another chance, but her attempt was blocked by Graceland's back line.
The Mustangs continued to press after the break, earning their second corner in the 58th minute through Eden Campbell. Brielle Bastian nearly broke through in the 70th minute, only for her strike to be denied by Porter. Mount Mercy registered two additional shots in the final 20 minutes, with Emelly Padilha's effort in the 87th minute blocked in the box.
The Mustangs will look to add more points to the conference standings with a matchup against William Woods, slated for Saturday at 1 p.m.
