Strong First Half Powers Mustangs Over Culver-Stockton

CANTON, Mo. — Mount Mercy built a four-goal advantage in the first half and held off a late rally to secure a 4-3 win over Culver-Stockton in Heart of America Athletic Conference play Wednesday night. The Mustangs improved to 5-1-2 overall and 3-0-1 in league action.

Mount Mercy opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Ava D'Ambrosio converted a service from Brielle Bastian. Just two minutes later, Orla Humphrey doubled the lead on an assist from Savannah Stout. Stout added a goal of her own in the 17th minute, finishing a pass from Lauren O'Toole. The Mustangs capped the half in the 43rd minute with Nadia Rodriguez's first goal of the season, assisted again by Bastian, to take a 4-0 advantage into the break.

Culver-Stockton responded with pressure in the second half. Alyson Smith scored in the 53rd minute off a setup from Lexi Clark. Less than five minutes later, Halle Jennex cut the deficit to 4-2, finishing from Smith. Mount Mercy's back line absorbed consistent pressure, conceding 11 second-half corner kicks. Goalkeeper Manuela Gutierrez registered six saves, including key stops against Smith and Jennex.

The Wildcats pulled within one in the final minute when Clark scored unassisted after an initial effort struck the crossbar. Despite the late concession, Mount Mercy cleared the ensuing restart to close out the match.

The Mustangs recorded 14 shots, with 11 on frame, while Culver-Stockton produced 19 attempts and nine on target. Mount Mercy held a 6-5 advantage in saves. The Mustangs also committed nine fouls compared to six for the Wildcats.

Mount Mercy continues conference play Saturday, returning home to face nationally ranked MidAmerica Nazarene, with kickoff slated for 1 p.m. at Hadzic Field.
