DUBUQUE, Iowa - Mount Mercy dropped a narrow 1-0 decision on the road against Clarke on Tuesday evening at Burrows Field, conceding in the closing minutes despite a disciplined defensive effort.
The Mustangs (5-3-2, 3-2-1 Heart of America) generated just two shots, including one on target, and were unable to capitalize on their lone corner kick. Clarke (3-5-2, 2-3-1) maintained the bulk of possession, recording 14 shots and five corners. Still, Mount Mercy's back line, anchored by defenders Eden Campbell and Marissa Taylor, limited clear scoring chances for much of the contest.
Goalkeeper Manuela Gutierrez played the full 90 minutes and finished with two saves. Her first came in the fifth minute, denying Clarke's Audrey McKenna, and she added another stop on a strike from Laryssa Pritchard in the 29th minute. Nadine Sanchez registered Mount Mercy's best chance in the 30th minute, but her attempt was handled by Pride goalkeeper Faith Krapfl. Brielle Bastian nearly connected on a late header in the 83rd minute, but the shot drifted wide.
The decisive moment arrived in the 89th minute when Pritchard broke through for Clarke with an unassisted goal, spoiling Mount Mercy's shutout bid. The Mustangs were whistled for 17 fouls, compared with 11 for the Pride, in a physical matchup that saw no cautions issued.
The Mustangs will return to the pitch on Saturday, taking on Baker in a road matchup, with kickoff slated for 1 p.m.
