Mustangs Second Half Rally Comes Up Short Against Missouri Baptist

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Mount Mercy's late surge came up just short Saturday as the Mustangs dropped a 3-2 decision to Missouri Baptist in Heart of America Athletic Conference play at Spartan Field.

After trailing 3-0 early in the second half, Mount Mercy (6-5-2, 4-4-1 Heart) mounted a strong comeback behind goals from Nadine Sanchez and Lauren O'Toole, but the equalizer never materialized despite sustained attacking pressure in the final 20 minutes.

Missouri Baptist (4-7-2, 4-3-1 Heart) struck early when Natalie Gum capitalized on a defensive turnover in the ninth minute. Gum later assisted Paige Rice on a 30th-minute strike to double the Spartans' lead. Gum added her second goal in the 55th minute to make it 3-0 before Mount Mercy found its footing.

The Mustangs responded in the 71st minute when Sanchez converted from close range off an assist from Hannah Dodds following a sequence that began with a corner kick by Eden Campbell. Two minutes later, O'Toole cut the deficit to one with an unassisted finish after collecting a loose ball in the box.

Mount Mercy controlled possession late, outshooting Missouri Baptist 15-11 overall and earning five corner kicks to the Spartans' one. Sanchez and Emelly Padilha each recorded multiple shots on goal, while goalkeeper Manuela Gutierrez finished with four saves.

Spartans keeper Jordyn Maryas made eight saves, including key stops on Sanchez and Savannah Stout in the closing minutes, preserving the home side's narrow advantage.

The Mustangs return home for the final time this season, taking on William Penn as the program honors its seniors on Wednesday, with kickoff slated for 5 p.m.
