Mustangs Overpowered by Central Methodist

FAYETTE, Mo. — Mount Mercy fell 9-0 to No. 14 Central Methodist on Sunday in Heart of America Athletic Conference play, as the Eagles maintained control from kickoff and limited the Mustangs to just two shots on goal.

The Mustangs (7-6-2, 5-5-1 Heart) struggled to maintain possession against a high press from Central Methodist (12-1-2, 10-0-1). Goalkeeper Manuela Gutierrez faced a relentless attack, registering six saves on 15 shots on goal. Mount Mercy's best chances came late in the second half, with attempts by Millie Edwards and Emelly Padilha both saved by CMU's reserve keeper, Brooke Assur.

Central Methodist built a 5-0 lead by halftime, capitalizing through quick combinations in the final third. Mariana Barreto completed a hat trick for the Eagles, while Luisa Schaupp added two goals. The Mustangs were held without a corner kick and committed eight fouls while defending deep for much of the match.

The Mustangs will return to the pitch on Friday, taking on Missouri Valley on the road in Marshall.
