Mustangs make history at indoor nationals
BROOKINGS, S.D. -- Andrea Ertz became the most decorated track & field all-American in school history, Bre Nail earned all-America honors for the first time, and Mitch Miller, Ceondae Adams, and Lauren Willson improved on their seeding at the 2022 NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex.
Led by Ertz, Nail, and Willson, the Mount Mercy women's squad finished 12th at the national championships, the highest team finish in the history of the program. Ertz is Mount Mercy's only eight-time NAIA all-American after runner-up finishes in the mile run and 1,000 meter run. She entered the championships ranked fifth in the mile, ran the fastest time in Friday's prelims, then came within a second of winning the national title. Her time of 4:56.17 in the finals on Saturday shattered her own school record. Only Becca Richtman of Montana Tech was faster, crossing the finish line in 4:55.76.
A couple hours later, Ertz was at it again, this time in the 1,000 meters. Ranked second in the nation coming in, she bested her own school record by more than two seconds, racing to another runner-up finish in 2:51.96. Lisa Voyles of Indiana Tech grabbed the individual title in 2:48.46.
Nail came through on the big stage as well. The sophomore put a stamp on her indoor season by finishing sixth in the shot put to earn all-America honors for the first time. Nail's second throw was her best, coming in at 13.52 meters. Allison Skala of Doane was the national champion in the event with a toss of 14.48 meters.
Willson, seeded 28th in the weight throw, placed 26th at the national championships with 14.30 meter toss on Friday. The weight throw title went to Catylynn Duff of College of Idaho (17.79m).
Miller was seeded 25th in his national meet debut, but moved up a few spots with his performance on Friday. His 16.49 meter toss was good for 21st place. National champion Matthew Campbell of Doane posted a mark of 20.91 meters.
Ceondae Adams qualified for nationals in two events and made the most of his first appearance at the championships. Seeded 37th in the 60 meter dash, he jumped all the way to 23rd and tied his own school record with a time of :06.93 in Friday's preliminaries. Also on Friday, Adams finished 25th in the 60 meter hurdles in :08.37. He was ranked 27th in the nation coming in.
