Vikings snap Mustang win streak
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- A dominant third set shifted the momentum and powered Grand View to a four-set victory over Mount Mercy on Thursday night at Hennessey Recreation Center. The Mustangs saw their five-match winning streak come to an end with a 25-23, 21-25, 25-12, 25-21 loss to the Viking in Heart of America Athletic Conference action.
The Mount Mercy offense was led by Maddie Bell (SR/Ely, Iowa), Abbi Tunis (SR/Davenport, Iowa), and Mackenzie Murphy (SO/Iowa City, Iowa), who combined for 42 kills. Bell had 15 to go along with five blocks. Tunis matched her with 15 of her own, while Murphy finished with 12. Kayla Daggett (SR/Madison, Wis.), the reigning NAIA Setter of the Week, dished out 44 assists. Gabi Delsing (SR/Coralville, Iowa) tallied 29 digs, Haley Stecklein (SR/Walford, Iowa) and Daggett 11 each.
The Mustangs (9-3, 9-3 Heart) are done with the regular season and await the pairings for the Heart Women's Volleyball Championship. Mount Mercy -- second in the Heart's North Division behind Grand View (12-0, 10-0 Heart) -- will host a quarterfinal match on Saturday, Nov. 14, agains the third-place team of the Heart's South Division. The opponent and start time for the match will be announced next week.
