CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Mount Mercy won a five-set thriller Tuesday night over William Penn to open the Heart of America Athletic Conference women's volleyball season. Trading set victories throughout the match at Hennessey Recreation Center, the Mustangs prevailed 25-18, 11-25, 25-22, 23-25, 16-14.
Cassidy Boche and Mackenzie Murphy led Mount Mercy with 19 and 17 kills respectively. Olivia Makinen added eight kills and Laila Sain had seven kills. Hailey Hested tallied 42 assists. Rylie Mussman had a team-best 24 digs, Hested had 19, and Boche added 13. Six different Mustangs combined for 11 service aces.
The Mustangs improved to 5-5 overall, while the Statesmen fell to 7-4. Back in action after nearly two weeks without a match, the Mustangs host back-to-back conference matches against Peru State on Friday at 7:00 pm and Graceland on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
