Mustangs Finish Fifth at Blazing Tiger NAIA Classic
ASHLAND, Neb. — The Mount Mercy University women's cross country team posted a strong team performance Saturday morning at the Blazing Tiger NAIA Classic, placing within the top 10 in a highly competitive 6,000-meter field hosted by Doane University.
Abby Knepper paced the Mustangs with a 10th-place individual finish in 22:10.01, averaging 5:56 per mile. Knepper's closing 1,000-meter split ranked among the fastest in the field, propelling her inside the top 10 overall.
Kalin Rotzoll followed as the team's No. 2 finisher in 22:56.88 for 27th overall. Annabelle Neal placed 52nd with a 23:23.44 clocking, while Olivia Norrish and Maria Dudzik rounded out the scoring lineup in 71st (23:47.79) and 83rd (23:59.73), respectively. Kayla Overton (86th, 24:03.54) and Emma Althoff (98th, 24:17.72) provided depth in displacement scoring.
The Mustangs compiled a team total of 230 points, placing them fifth among 27 scoring teams. Mount Mercy averaged 23:27 per runner, securing a top-half team finish against nationally ranked opponents from the NAIA Midwest Region.
The College of Idaho captured the women's team title behind four top-10 finishers and a 21:54 average. Bellevue's Grace Steinmetz won the individual championship in 20:48.03, leading wire-to-wire in the athlete field.
Mount Mercy displayed steady pack running, with all seven runners finishing within 2:08 of the team's lead finisher. The Mustangs also recorded their lowest compression gap of the season, reflecting consistent pacing across all scoring positions.
The Mustangs will return to action Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championship at Seminole Valley Park in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The meet starts at 11:30 a.m.
