Mustangs Secure Strong Second-Place Finish in Conference Championship
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Mount Mercy University women's cross country team recorded a solid team performance Saturday at the 2025 Heart of America Athletic Conference Championships, held at Seminole Valley Park in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Mustangs placed four runners among the top 35 in the 6K championship field, posting a competitive team score in the season's final conference meet.
Abby Knepper led the Mustangs with a 21:26.6 finish, earning first place overall and securing the individual Heart of America title. Her effort paced a consistent Mount Mercy pack that executed well across all three timing splits. Kalin Rotzoll followed at 22:10.6 for 12th place, while Annabelle Neal crossed in 22:15.8 for 13th. Olivia Norrish (23:06.9, 28th) and Kayla Overton (23:07.8, 29th) rounded out the scoring five for Mount Mercy.
Maria Dudzik (23:15.3, 33rd) and Emma Althoff (23:17.7, 35th) provided key displacement in the Mustang pack spread, which measured under two minutes from the lead finisher to the final scorer.
Mount Mercy maintained tight compression between its second and fifth runners, an important metric in team scoring efficiency. The Mustangs' 1–5 split of 1:41 placed them in the upper tier of conference performance metrics, contributing to a balanced team scoring grid against programs such as Benedictine, William Penn, and Missouri Valley.
Mount Mercy finished second overall in the team standings with 75 points, placing behind Benedictine (30 points). Missouri Valley took third with 100 points, followed by William Penn (122) and MidAmerica Nazarene (157). The Mustangs' collective performance solidified their position among the conference's top programs, advancing their case for postseason qualification.
The Mustangs will now await potential individual and team qualification updates for the 2025 NAIA National Championships, scheduled for November 21 in Tallahassee, Florida.
