Mustangs get Monday sweep, Tuesday's action postponed
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Mount Mercy baseball team extended its winning streak to nine games after a 1-0, 5-3 sweep of Peru State in Monday's Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader at the Robert W. Plaster Athletic Complex. The series was cut short, however, as wind combined with cold temperatures forced the postponement of Tuesday's action.
The teams combined for just seven hits in the opener, with Evan Paulus' RBI double in the fourth plating Zach Barden with the game's only run. Tyler Dahm finished 2-for-3 while Paulus and Sam Stonskas had the other two hits. Kobey Schlotman (5-0) locked down his fifth win, tossing a complete-game three-hitter while striking out 11 and walking one.
The Mustangs came from behind to win the nightcap. After Kyle Moeder's fifth home run of the year -- a two-run shot to left-center field, gave Mount Mercy a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, Peru State's Devin Adams hit a three-run blast in the fourth to put the Bobcats in front.
An inning later the Mustangs put up three runs of their own. Dahm's run-scoring single scored Dalton Hews, a Kaimana Souza-Paaluhi RBI single plated Drake Frazier, and then Dahm came around on an error to finish off the scoring. Nathan Pardini (3-0) earned the victory with 5-1/3 innings of four-hit ball. He allowed three earned runs with six strikeouts and a pair of walks. Kale Orman struck out two and didn't allow a hit in 1-2/3 innings for his second save.
With Tuesday's action postponed, Mount Mercy (18-6, 9-1 Heart) sets its sights on a four-game set with Clarke (20-7, 9-1 Heart) this weekend in Peosta. First pitch will be at 1:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday at Spiegel Park.
