Offense paves the way to series win
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Mount Mercy battered Benedictine pitching while taking three of four games in their Heart of America Athletic Conference series on Monday and Tuesday at the Robert W. Plaster Athletic Complex.
The Mustangs and Ravens split their doubleheader on Monday. Mount Mercy rapped 12 hits to overcome four errors and used a six-run sixth inning to win, 12-9. Riley Rundquist went 2-for-3 with four runs batted in to lead the charge. Drake Frazier drove in three runs while Jeremy Figueroa, Tyler Dahm, and Ryan Knowlton collected two hits each. Joe Gabel (2-0) got the win in relief of Blake Harseim and Ashton Schwab.
Mount Mercy held a one-run lead after four but saw Benedictine put up three runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth to edge the Mustangs, 7-6, in game two. Figueroa and Knowlton homered while Evan Paulus went 3-for-3 with an RBI. Kyle Lehmann (3-1) took the loss after going 4-2/3 innings and surrendering five earned runs on eight hits.
The Mustangs wasted no time getting a leg up on the Ravens in game three of the series, scoring three times in the second inning and seven runs in the third while cruising to a 14-3 victory. Kyle Moeder had a 3-for-3 game with four RBI. Paulus had three runs scored and four runs batted in while Derek Einertson drove in three runs with a sacrifice fly and two-run single. Jackson Bennett (2-1) struck out seven while scattering four hits and an earned run in five frames.
Mount Mercy grabbed an early lead again in the series finale, a 7-2 win for the Mustangs. Moeder collected three more RBI, Dalton Hews went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs driven in and Dahm added an RBI. Brady Schiesl (3-2) kept the Ravens at bay, limiting them to a single run on three hits while striking out eight over five innings. Jon Cross and Josh Fleming each threw an inning out of the bullpen.
Mount Mercy (15-8, 6-2 Heart) continues its homestand this weekend when Graceland visits Cedar Rapids. First pitch is 1:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday at the PAC.
