Win streak hits 10 as Mustangs return home for weekend set

CANTON, Mo. -- The Mount Mercy offense has been hot of late, and the result is a 10-game winning streak after sweeping Culver-Stockton on Sunday and Monday in Heart of America Athletic Conference action at Nichols Field.

The Mustangs scored three runs in three different innings in the series opener, the last coming in the top of the ninth for a 9-7, extra innings victory. All three runs in the Mount Mercy ninth were unearned. Jeremy Figueroa, Evan Paulus, and Kyle Moeder has multi-hit games. Paulus and Matthew Murphy also drove in two runs each. Joe Gabel (3-0) pitched 2-2/3 in relief to earn the win, while Jon Cross struck out the only batter he faced to close it out for his team-best fifth save.

Game two was another offensive display for the Mustangs, who tallied nine hits in a 12-3 victory. Tyler Dahm was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two runs batted in out of the leadoff spot. Riley Rundquist, Zach Barden, and Justin Janssen finished with two RBI apiece. Kyle Lehmann (5-1) made another strong start, striking out three while giving up just two earned runs on four hits in five frames.

A five-run first inning powered Mount Mercy to an 8-5 win over the Wildcats in Monday's opener. The Mustangs totaled 13 more hits, getting three apiece from Knowlton and Murphy and two each by Dahm and Paulus. Knowlton, Paulus, and Murphy also had two RBI. Jackson Bennett (3-1) allowed three earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts, then handed things over to Kale Orman, who struck out three over the final two frames.

Mount Mercy put up another double-digit hit total in the series finale, a 10-1 rout. Barden was 3-for-4 with a solo homer and two-run double. Murphy added a two-run bomb. Rundquist plated two runs with a single and sacrifice fly. Brady Schiesl (4-2) picked up the victory after four innings of four-hit ball. He gave up one earned run while striking out two. Josh Fleming got his second save with three shutout innings that included a pair of strikeouts.

Mount Mercy (23-8, 14-2 Heart) sits atop the league's North Division and will host Grand View (16-8, 4-7 Heart) this weekend at the Robert W. Plaster Athletic Complex. First pitch will be at 1:00 pm on Friday and Saturday.
