Mustangs Secure Battle of the Mount Title with Doubleheader Sweep
PAPILLION, Neb. — Mount Mercy faced off against Mount Marty in a thrilling doubleheader on Monday, securing a narrow 14-13 victory in the first game and a decisive 13-7 win in the second.
In Game 1, the Mustangs' offense exploded late with four home runs, fueling a seven-run surge in the final three innings. Mount Marty initially took control, scoring five runs in the first inning thanks to a series of hits and an error. Mount Mercy began their comeback in the third inning with Derek Einertson hitting a two-run homer. Lane Spieker contributed an RBI single, narrowing the gap to 8-3 after Mount Marty added three more runs in the top of the third.
Sam Wiese hit a solo home run in the fifth, bringing the score to 10-4. The Mustangs ignited in the seventh with a five-run inning, highlighted by Wiese's two-RBI single and Spieker's three-run homer, cutting the Mount Marty lead to two runs. In a dramatic ninth inning, down by three, DJ Harris drew a walk that drove in Spieker. Drew Terpins scored on an error, setting the stage for Michael Rivero's two-run walkoff homer.
Spieker had a standout performance with three hits and four RBIs, including a home run. Wiese added two hits and three RBIs, and Einertson scored three runs with two RBIs. Rivero's clutch homer off the bench contributed two runs and two RBIs.
For Mount Marty, Daniel Vonnegut led with three hits, including a home run and a double, contributing two RBIs and two runs. Cooper Mlnarik had four hits, a double, three runs, and an RBI. Ethan Synovec made an impact with a homer and three RBIs, while Tyler Vance showcased his defensive skills with four assists.
On the mound, Mount Mercy's Colton Clarahan struggled, allowing eight earned runs over three innings. Jack Turgasen provided stability in relief, striking out eight over four innings. Cole Bormann earned the win with two innings of work, allowing two earned runs. Mount Marty's Mitchell Hamrock started but lasted only 2 1/3 innings, giving up three earned runs.
In Game 2, Mount Mercy continued their strong performance with an eight-run fourth inning. Both teams traded runs initially, with Derek Einertson scoring alongside Christian Graves, who hit a two-run homer to tie the game at 2-2. Mount Marty briefly led 4-2 after Jalen Owens' RBI triple, but the Mustangs responded, tying it up at 4-4.
Mount Mercy's defense held Mount Marty scoreless in the third and fourth innings before unleashing an offensive barrage in the fourth. Sam Wiese blasted a three-run homer, followed by Lane Spieker's three-run shot, and Yahirdavi Ortiz capped the inning with a two-RBI single, extending the lead to 12-4.
Mount Marty attempted a comeback in the fifth with Cooper Mlnarik's two-run homer, but the Mustangs countered with an RBI single from Drew Terpins. Jaycob Pascuzzi added a solo homer for Mount Marty in the sixth, but Mount Mercy maintained their lead comfortably.
Wiese was pivotal again, hitting a home run and driving in three RBIs. Graves matched him with a home run and three hits, also recording three RBIs. Einertson scored three times and Ortiz had two hits, two RBIs, and contributed defensively with five assists.
For Mount Marty, Mlnarik was a bright spot with a home run and two RBIs, while Daniel Vonnegut scored twice and had a solid OPS. Gio Galvan also contributed with four assists and drove in two runs.
On the mound, Mount Mercy's Cole Conner pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing six earned runs. Caden Sudbeck started for Mount Marty but struggled, giving up two runs in one inning and taking the loss after Logan Bobzin allowed five earned runs in two innings.
Looking ahead, Mount Mercy will host Morningside at noon CT on Saturday, Feb. 14, in Kansas City, Missouri.
