Mustangs Swept by Morningside to Close Weekend
OMAHA, Neb. - Mount Mercy's baseball team faced a challenging doubleheader against Morningside on Sunday in Omaha, resulting in two close contests.
In the first game, Mount Mercy fell 5-4 despite a late rally. The game remained scoreless until the sixth inning, when Lane Spieker put Mount Mercy on the board with a solo home run, narrowing Morningside's lead to 1-0. Morningside quickly responded, with Jacob O'Dell hitting a two-run homer and Luke Blackmon following with a solo blast, extending their advantage to 5-1.
In the seventh inning, Mount Mercy attempted to mount a comeback. Kade Knock delivered a clutch two-RBI single, driving in Chase Gerwig and Sam Wiese, while Michael Rivero singled to bring Spieker home, narrowing the score to 5-4. However, the Mustangs fell just short. Spieker had a standout performance with a home run and two runs scored, while Knock added two RBIs. On the mound, Jack Turgasen pitched four solid innings, allowing just two hits and striking out four, while Michael Schaul struggled in relief, giving up three earned runs in one inning. For Morningside, O'Dell excelled with two hits, two runs, two RBIs, and a home run, while Conner Maston secured the win with 4 1/3 scoreless innings and seven strikeouts. Mount Mercy's record now stands at 3-4, while Morningside improves to 6-1.
In the second game, Mount Mercy faced Morningside again and fell 3-1 in another closely contested matchup. The Mustangs managed just four hits and one run, struggling against Morningside's pitching over the final four innings. Mount Mercy tied the game in the top of the third when Yahirdavi Ortiz led off with a single and advanced on a wild pitch. Derek Einertson added a single, and Sam Wiese was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Christian Graves grounded out to second, bringing Ortiz home for what would be Mount Mercy's only run.
However, Morningside quickly regained the lead in the third inning after Michael Delzell drew a walk and Jacob O'Dell singled, with a throwing error allowing Delzell to score. Morningside extended their lead in the sixth, capitalizing on Mount Mercy's throwing errors to push the score to 3-1. Derek Einertson stood out with two hits, including a double, while Christian Graves drove in a crucial RBI. On the mound, Cole Conner pitched 5 1/3 innings, yielding four hits and three earned runs while striking out five. Cole Bormann provided solid relief without allowing a hit in two-thirds of an inning. For Morningside, Purdy-Bur pitched a complete game, allowing just one earned run on four hits and improving to 2-0, while King contributed a home run and an RBI.
With these results, Mount Mercy now holds a record of 3-5, while Morningside improves to 7-1. The Mustangs will look to rebound in their next matchup on the road against Webber International next weekend.
