Mustangs Secure Series Split with Win Over Ranked Webber International
BABSON PARK, Fla. — Mount Mercy pulled off a solid 5-2 win against Webber International (FL) on Sunday, thanks to a commanding three-run fifth inning.
The game got rolling in the third when Nick Meyer earned a walk and stole second. Derek Einertson's bunt single pushed Meyer to third, and he crossed home plate on Chase Gerwig's single. Einertson also found his way home on a wild pitch, giving Mount Mercy a 2-0 lead by the end of the third.
The Mustangs really hit their stride in the fifth. Christian Graves walked, stole second, and scored on a single by Sam Wiese. Lane Spieker followed up with a double and capitalized on an error to bring in both Wiese and himself, stretching the lead to 5-0 after five innings.
Webber International fought back in the eighth with a triple from Mike Cuello, who scored on a double by Ty Mathews. They managed another run in the ninth, but Mount Mercy held strong to finish the game 5-2.
Sam Wiese was a standout with three hits and an RBI, bolstering Mount Mercy's offense. Lane Spieker shone as well, with two doubles and two RBIs among his three hits. Chase Gerwig chipped in with a hit and an RBI, while also excelling defensively with four assists at second base. Christian Graves drew two walks, scored a run, and stole a base, reinforcing the team's position.
On the mound, Cole Conner led Mount Mercy with 4 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out three with no runs allowed. Colton Clarahan claimed the win, pitching 3 1/3 innings and giving up just three hits and one earned run. For Webber International, Steven Rojas pitched three scoreless innings, striking out four and allowing only one hit. However, Trevor Carter struggled, taking the loss after surrendering two earned runs on three hits and a walk in one inning.
Next up, the Mustangs will host Coe at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4 in Cedar Rapids for their home opener at the Robert W. Plaster Athletic Complex.
