Mustangs Secure Win in Home Opener Over Coe

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Mount Mercy (6-7) pulled off a commanding 6-0 win over Coe on Wednesday. The Mustangs' pitching was on point, limiting Coe to just three hits in a shutout performance.

The game turned in Mount Mercy's favor with a standout sixth inning. Darrell Michael Jean scored on a hit by pitch from Nick Meyer, followed by Sam Wiese taking advantage of a passed ball to add another run. Chase Gerwig stepped up with a key two-RBI double, driving in Lane Spieker and DJ Harris. Derek Einertson rounded off the inning with an RBI groundout, pushing the Mustangs to a 5-0 lead.

In the seventh, the Mustangs widened their lead. Nash Clementz walked, made his way around the bases, bumping the score to 6-0. Mount Mercy held on to this lead, sealing their shutout victory.

Gerwig's double was pivotal, bringing in two runs. Colten Clarahan took the mound for six innings, allowing only one hit and striking out three to earn the win. Clementz was active on the base paths, drawing a walk, scoring a run, and swiping three bases. Yahirdavi Ortiz was solid in the field, making six assists.

For Coe, Jake Mitchell stood out with a double and two walks. Jon Wille showed his defensive prowess with four assists at shortstop. Ryan Brosius contributed two hits on the Kohawk offense.
