Mustangs Sting Bees in Non-Conference Matchup
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Mount Mercy (9-8) claimed a decisive 7-3 win over St. Ambrose (8-8) on Tuesday, seizing control with a pivotal three-run seventh inning. The Mustangs racked up 10 hits, including three doubles and a triple, while limiting St. Ambrose to seven hits.
The action kicked off in the fifth inning. Chase Gerwig's single, followed by a bunt, moved him to second. A hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, and Sam Wiese drew a walk, allowing Drew Terpins to cross home for the game's first run. The Mustangs led 1-0 at the inning's close.
In the sixth, DJ Harris singled, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored on a groundout by Gerwig. Despite St. Ambrose capitalizing on errors to score three unearned runs, the Mustangs found themselves trailing 3-2 by the end of the sixth.
Mount Mercy reclaimed the lead in the seventh. Kade Knock and Lane Spieker were both hit by pitches, loading the bases once more. Nick Meyer lifted a sacrifice fly to bring in a run, and Harris followed with a two-RBI double, putting the Mustangs ahead 5-3.
The eighth inning saw Wiese deliver a two-RBI double, sending Spieker and Derek Einertson home and stretching the Mustangs' lead to 7-3.
In the ninth, Jake Weissenberger efficiently closed the game with three quick outs, sealing the Mustangs' victory.
Sam Wiese had a standout performance, driving in three runs with a double. Harris shone with four hits, including a double and a triple, tallying two RBIs. Spieker scored twice, highlighting his knack for reaching home. On the mound, Colten Clarahan pitched five innings without yielding an earned run, striking out one.
For St. Ambrose, Quinn Flanagan recorded one hit and a hit-by-pitch. His defensive prowess was evident with two assists and a double play. Mason Heitzler, playing shortstop, contributed significantly with four assists and involvement in a double play. At the plate, Luke Brabham drove in the team's sole RBI.
