Mustangs Comeback Not Enough to Stop Red Hot Statesmen
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Mount Mercy generated consistent half-court offense and produced a strong second-half surge, but defensive breakdowns and William Penn's dominance in the paint led to a 99–93 loss Tuesday night at Hennessey Rec Center.
The Mustangs (4–6, 0–3 Heart) traded leads early behind perimeter efficiency and multiple ball-screen actions that freed Brayson Laube and Kaden Johnson for clean looks. Mount Mercy recorded eight lead changes in the opening 10 minutes, shooting 47.1 percent before intermission. But William Penn's length and rim pressure created a 58–45 halftime deficit, capped by a 12–2 run fueled by transition layups and second-chance conversions.
Mount Mercy attempted to recalibrate defensively by switching more ball screens and tagging rollers earlier, but the Statesmen continued to score at the rim. William Penn finished with a 64–34 advantage in paint points and a 40–27 edge on the glass, driven by Foday Sheriff's 19 points and 13 rebounds. The Mustangs' inability to finish possessions compounded the deficit, as the visitors collected 14 second-chance points compared with Mount Mercy's 17.
Still, the Mustangs responded with one of their most efficient offensive halves of the season. Jaxson Fried repeatedly attacked downhill, generating 14 second-half points and going 5-for-5 at the line. Dimitrije Nikolic added a key pick-and-pop 3 during a 12–2 surge that cut the margin to 78–79 with 8:26 left.
Laube, who finished with a team-high 27 points on 4-for-6 from beyond the arc, continued to create off staggered screens and isolation sets, while Aidan Yamilkoski posted 16 points and five rebounds. Mount Mercy converted 18 of 24 free throws and forced 19 turnovers, producing 27 points off giveaways.
But William Penn stabilized behind late-clock isolations and interior touches, closing the game with a 16–14 edge over the final four minutes. Sheriff and Daivion Boleware combined for 35 points, preventing the Mustangs from completing the comeback despite outscoring the Statesmen 48–41 in the second half.
The Mustangs will return to the court after the Thanksgiving break, taking on Grand View at home on December 3.
