CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Mount Mercy built an early two-goal advantage but could not hold off a second-half push, falling 5-4 to Grand View in a Heart of America Athletic Conference opener Saturday at Hadzic Field.
The Mustangs (3-2-1, 0-1-0) controlled much of the first half, with Pablo Ortega Herreros completing a quick brace inside the opening 10 minutes. His first strike came in the third minute off a service from Guilherme Venancio, followed minutes later when Erik Richier provided the assist on Ortega Herreros' seventh goal of the season. Ortega Herreros capped the run in the seventh minute, finishing from a Danilo Obradovic delivery to put Mount Mercy ahead 3-1.
Tomas Parra Reyna extended the margin to 4-2 in the 29th minute with an unassisted goal, but the Vikings (4-0-1, 1-0-0) responded before the break. Ignacio Gonzalez converted a penalty in the 37th minute, and Kevin Ventura equalized in the 41st off a Daniel Sandoval assist, sending the teams into halftime tied 4-4.
The decisive moment came in the 73rd minute when Gonzalez converted his second penalty kick of the afternoon, giving Grand View the final edge. Despite generating five corner kicks and six total shots, Mount Mercy was held scoreless in the second half.
