Mustangs Draw with Statesmen on Senior Night

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Mount Mercy men's soccer held firm defensively in a 0-0 draw against Heart of America rival William Penn on Wednesday night at Hadzic Field.

Senior goalkeeper Alejandro Cuende anchored the Mustangs' back line, recording six saves across 90 minutes to secure his clean sheet. Despite being outshot 11-4, Mount Mercy absorbed sustained pressure and managed to keep the Statesmen off the scoresheet through disciplined defending and organized play in the defensive third.

The Mustangs generated limited attacking opportunities, recording four total shots — including efforts from Patrick Burke and Pablo Ortega Herreros that drifted wide. Mount Mercy earned three corner kicks, two early in the second half, but failed to convert on set pieces.

The match grew physical, featuring 39 total fouls and eight yellow cards, including six cautions issued to Mount Mercy. Despite the interruptions, Cuende and the Mustang back line, led by defenders Ensar Fejzic and Lucas Olivera, remained composed under consistent pressure.

The Mustangs honored 19 graduating seniors, and await a road matchup with Central Methodist on Saturday, with kickoff slated for 7:30 p.m.
