Mustangs Win Streak Ends In Loss to Pirates
PARKVILLE, Mo. — The Mount Mercy University volleyball team (7-1, 3-1) faced a tough challenge against Park University (13-0, 5-0) on Friday evening, falling in straight sets, 0-3. The Mustangs, however, showed resilience, posting a competitive attack percentage of .370 in the opening set.
Mount Mercy's first set against Park was a nail-biter, ending at 25-23 in favor of the Pirates. Standout performances came from Guglielmo Illotti and Gabor Toth, who capitalized on strategic assists from Gustavo Kehl Bauer. Despite these efforts, Adrian Figueroa's decisive kills and Murillo Silva's crucial blocks gave Park the edge. Both teams battled service errors, adding to the set's intensity.
In the second set, Park's defense tightened, capitalizing on Mount Mercy's attack errors to gain a substantial lead. Moises Ortiz and Mihailo Ivanovic were key in disrupting the Mustang offense, while Jovan Nikolic delivered multiple successful kills, including pivotal moments at 6-3 and 14-6. Despite Mount Mercy's push, including two service aces by Toth, Park closed the set decisively at 25-14.
The third set saw Mount Mercy putting up a strong fight, but service errors again proved costly in a 25-20 loss. Illotti and Raphael Massara each contributed multiple kills, yet Park's defensive blocks, led by Ortiz, proved too much for the Mustangs to overcome.
Illotti stood out for Mount Mercy with 13 kills on 29 attempts, contributing significantly to the team's scoring. Kehl Bauer provided 28 assists and had a .667 attack percentage with two kills on three attempts. Massara added six kills on nine swings with a .444 hitting percentage and participated in one block assist. Toth contributed both offensively and defensively with five kills, two service aces, and one block assist, totaling 7.5 points.
