Mustangs Secure Dominant Win Over Vikings

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Mount Mercy University (16-2, 11-2) swept Grand View University (8-6, 7-5) in straight sets with a commanding 3-0 win on Tuesday evening. The Mustangs showcased a powerful offensive display, boasting a .330 hitting percentage, and clinched the sets 25-17, 25-21, and 25-21.

The Mustangs seized control early in the first set, capitalizing on pivotal plays and minimizing errors to establish a 25-17 victory. Gabor Toth and Guglielmo Illotti were standout contributors with multiple kills, while Gustavo Kehl Bauer orchestrated the offense with numerous assists and chipped in a service ace.

Defensively, strategic blocks forced the Vikings into numerous attack errors, providing a steady scoring advantage for Mount Mercy.

In the second set, Mount Mercy surged late to secure a 25-21 win against the Vikings. Richard Struska's three timely service aces were crucial in maintaining momentum. Bauer's consistent sets paved the way for key kills, with Curdin Acklin and Toth delivering essential points.

Despite some service errors, the Mustangs skillfully turned the Vikings' attack errors into points. The set wrapped up with Mount Mercy closing the frame with four unanswered points, overcoming a tense 21-21 tie.

The Mustangs clinched the third set with a decisive 25-21 triumph, highlighted by Toth's four kills and a crucial service ace. Bauer effectively facilitated the offense, tallying multiple assists, while the team capitalized on the Vikings' errors, including five service errors. Despite the Vikings' efforts to narrow the gap, Mount Mercy maintained their lead through blocks and consistent scoring to seal the victory.

Struska shone with four service aces and a flawless hitting percentage, converting all his attack attempts. Toth led the team with 13 kills, hitting at a .478 percentage, and added a block assist. Matthew Krzos was efficient with a .625 hitting percentage, contributing five kills and four block assists. Bauer directed the offense with 34 assists, also recording 11 digs and three block assists.

Andre Lucas Alves Leandro led the Vikings with 8 points, contributing 6 kills and achieving 3 total blocks. His performance was supported by Jake Winters, who tallied 7 kills and 4 digs, totaling 7 points. Chris Davis also emerged as a key player, recording 7 kills with a .357 hitting percentage and matching Winters with 7 points.

Cheikh Sou was notable on defense, accumulating 4 blocks and adding 5.5 points to the team's effort. These players formed the backbone of the team's statistics in their recent games.

The Mustangs currently hold a record of 16-2 overall and 11-2 in conference play. The Vikings stand at 8-6 overall and 7-5 in conference matchups.

Looking ahead, Mount Mercy will face Kansas Wesleyan on Saturday, March 21, at 1 p.m. in Salina, Kansas.
