Mustangs Split Doubleheader to Close Out Weekend

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Mount Mercy's softball team splits their doubleheader on Saturday, securing a 6-0 victory over Waldorf but falling 7-5 to Morningside.

GAME 1

In game one, the Mustangs secured their first win of the season in a 6-0 victory over Waldorf.

Right from the first pitch, the Mustangs showed their offensive strength. With Ashley Smith getting walked in the bottom of the first, she would soon put up the first run of the game for the Mustangs when Calli Janik stole second.

The Mustang's offensive power continued in the bottom of the fifth. With Calli Janik singling to left and Sarah Heick getting walked, this set the stage for Alyssa McElvain to hit a three-run home run to extend the Mustangs lead 4-0. In the bottom of the sixth, the Mustangs would score again on a Mia Petersen two RBI triple. The Mustangs would end the game with a 6-0 score line in the top of the seventh.

Mount Mercy's Maggie McNally would earn her first victory of the season with five Warrior strikeouts and allowing only one hit. Alyssa McElvain would come in and shut the door on the Warriors with three strikeouts and allow one hit.

Waldorf's Geneva Molina claimed her first loss of the season after pitching four innings and allowing four earned runs. Reagan Ridout would pitch two innings for the Warriors and allowed two runs.

GAME 2

In game two, the Mustangs took an early lead heading into the second inning, but late Morningside rallies proved too much to overcome.

The first inning saw Calli Janik start the rally with a double to right-center, scoring Ashley Smith. In the next at-bat, Sarah Heick recorded an RBI single as Janik came around to score. Smith then crossed home after Abbey Smith reached first on an error, giving the Mustangs an early 3-0 lead.

Morningside responded to the Mustangs' early rally, scoring one run in the second inning and two in the third to tie the game at 3-3. In the bottom of the fourth, Morningside tacked on three more runs and added another in the sixth to take a 7-3 lead.

The Mustangs did not go down without a fight. In a late rally, Janik blasted a two-run home run to right-center, but it wasn't enough, as Morningside secured a 7-5 victory.

Mount Mercy's Ashley Webb took the loss after allowing three earned runs in relief. Morgan Secora earned the win for Morningside, pitching seven innings and surrendering just three earned runs.

The Mustangs return to action on February 15 for another doubleheader, facing Simpson and St. Ambrose in Davenport, Iowa.
