Firestorm’s Late Surge Seals Sweep Over Mustangs

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Mount Mercy's softball team closed out its road trip in Arizona with a doubleheader against Arizona Christian. The Mustangs dropped both games, falling 1-0 in the opener and 5-2 in game two.

Game 1

Sarah Heick's flawless 3-for-3 performance at the plate wasn't enough to lift the Mustangs, as they fell to Arizona Christian, 1-0.

After three scoreless innings, the Firestorm broke the deadlock in the fourth when Taylor Fogleman roped an RBI double down the left-field line, driving in the game's only run. Despite collecting six hits, the Mustangs struggled to capitalize, leaving five runners stranded.

Mount Mercy's Ashley Webb (2-6) took the loss, allowing six hits and one run over five innings while striking out six. Arizona Christian's Dayna Herrera earned the win, tossing seven scoreless innings, surrendering six hits, and striking out three.

Game 2

A three-run sixth inning proved to be the difference as the Mustangs fell, 5-2, in the second game of the doubleheader.

Mount Mercy struck first in the second inning when Annika Headington laced an RBI double down the right-field line. The Mustangs held the lead until the fifth, when the Firestorm responded with RBI singles from Alianna Gibbings and Christina Grubb to go ahead, 2-1.

The Firestorm extended their lead in the sixth, with Herrera delivering a two-run double, followed by a Brenna Henry RBI single to make it 5-1. The Mustangs managed to push across a run in the seventh but could not complete the rally for a 5-2 loss.

Maggie McNally (4-3) took the loss, allowing five runs on four hits while striking out six in five innings. The Firestorm's Hanna Butcher earned the win, pitching a complete game and allowing two runs on seven hits.

Mount Mercy (8-12) will be back on the field as they start their conference schedule at Benedictine on Saturday, March 22, with the first game beginning at 1:00 p.m.
