Mustangs Take One of Two Against Statesmen in Home Finale

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Mount Mercy's softball team split its Senior Day doubleheader against William Penn, winning the opener 5-4 before falling 2-0 in the nightcap.

Game One

The Mustangs took the opener, 5-4, with Annika Headington going 2-for-3 at the plate and driving in two runs.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Sarah Heick singled to second base to bring home Abbey Smith, and Headington followed with a double to left-center to drive in another run.

Calli Janik extended the lead in the third with a double to left-center, scoring Ashley Smith for a 3-0 advantage. In the fifth, As. Smith scored as Ab. Smith stole second, and Headington capped the scoring for the Mustangs with an RBI single to center that plated Ab. Smith.

The Statesmen mounted a rally in the sixth, scoring all four of its runs in the inning. Chelsey Huff started the surge with an RBI single to right-center. Tori Smith followed with a double to left-center, and Rylee Riesberg tied the game with a two-run single up the middle.

The Mustangs held off the Statesmen in the top of the seventh to secure the win.

Alyssa McElvain earned the win in the circle, pitching 5.2 innings while allowing four runs on six hits and striking out five. Maggie McNally picked up the save, holding the Statesmen to two hits over the final 1.1 innings.

Huff took the loss for the Statesmen despite striking out 11 and allowing five runs on eight hits in six innings.

Game Two

The Statesmen bounced back in game two, shutting out the Mustangs 2-0 and limiting them to just four hits.

After three scoreless innings, the Statesmen broke through in the top of the fourth. Laila Pelds singled to center to score two and give the Statesmen all the offense they would need.

Ashley Webb took the loss for Mount Mercy despite a complete-game effort, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out five.

Madie Anderson earned the win for William Penn, tossing seven shutout innings while striking out five.

Mount Mercy (24-21, 13-9 Heart) will close out the regular season on Saturday, April 26, traveling to face Culver-Stockton in Canton, Mo. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
