CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Mount Mercy women's soccer team ended its home schedule in style Tuesday night with a convincing 3-0 victory over William Penn in Heart of America Athletic Conference action at Hadzic Field.
Although the Statesmen out-shot the Mustangs, 16-6, it was the quality of those looks that counted. Grace Ries opened the scoring on an assist by Miran Sakai in the 24th minute, then Ava D'Ambrosio took a long pass from Katie Gannon and chipped it over goalkeeper Madeline Danielson to make it 2-0 in the 33rd minute.
William Penn kept the pressure on, but solid defense by the Mustangs and keeper Grace Byers (six saves) was the difference. Sakai added an unassisted goal in the 79th minute for added cushion for Mount Mercy, which snapped a four-game losing streak.
The Mustangs have two matches remaining in the regular season. They travel to Baldwin City, Kan., to take on Baker on Oct. 29 at 1:00 pm, then head to Fayette, Mo., on Halloween for a match against eighth-ranked Central Methodist at 1:00 pm.
